Have you ever wondered where the term "MEMS" came from?

These events are intended for High-School and College STEM Faculty only.

You are invited to attend any or all three of these events.  SCME is offering these hands-on microsystems "kits for the classroom" workshops to qualified secondary and post-secondary instructors.  The purpose is to bring Micro Electro Mechanical (MEMS) concepts into the STEM classroom and hopefully "jazz" your students - give them more reasons to want to study STEM topics.

Accepted participants will receive a stipend for attending each workshop they attend - Enrollement is limited to 20 educators per workshop - Apply Now!

Workshop Description

October 16, 2010

10am - 3pm

Pressure Sensor Model Workshop

This workshop covers the applications, design, and operation of MEMS pressure sensors.  Participants will construct a macro-size model of a MEMS pressure sensor using a paint can for the substrate and sensor’s reference chamber, a balloon for the sensor’s diaphragm, and a mixture of graphite and rubber cement for the sensing circuit.  After learning about the Wheatstone bridge as a sensing circuit, participants will apply this knowledge to an analysis of their pressure sensor model.  Workshop discussions will include where and how this material and the related activities can be incorporated into an existing curriculum.

BioMEMS Workshop

This workshop covers the applications, operations, and fabrication of BioMEMS, MEMS used in the medical field. Participants will complete several activities that will help them to better understand the scale of biomolecules and how biomolecules and microsize devices are used for medical diagnostics, therapeutics and gene analysis. Workshop discussions will include where and how this material and the related activities can be incorporated into an existing curriculum.

1pm-5pm

MicroCantilevers Workshop

This workshop covers the applications and operation of MEMS cantilever and MEMS cantilever arrays.  This workshop will simulate the dynamic operation of MEMS cantilevers - cantilevers that use a change in resonant frequency to identify changes in cantilever mass due to the accumulation of micro and nano-size materials on the cantilever’s surface.  Participants will use various materials to study how a dynamic cantilever’s operation is affected by its dimensions and mass.  Workshop discussions will include where and how this material and the related activities can be incorporated into an existing curriculum.

You are encouraged to bring your laptop and digital camera!
