For High School and Community College STEM Faculty
SCME is hosting a series of workshops that focus on classroom activities related to STEM and microtechnology concepts that can easily be incorporated into your existing curricula. All workshops are held on a Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the University of New Mexico's South Campus, 800 Bradbury Drive SE, Room 160, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Microcantilever Model Workshops – Part I and II: March 14, 28
Each workshop includes the following:
Pre-workshop reading assignment.
Instruction in microtechnology topics.
Specific information on using microtechnology kits and activities to teach basic concepts in several disciplines: math, science, physics, engineering, and technology.
Complete coverage of the SCME kit material and supporting learning modules.
Time to discover how the kits and learning modules meet the STEM and NGSS standards.
Strategies for incorporating the topics and activities into your curricula.

Scholarships and Payments: APS high school instructors will be paid at the current APS hourly rate for each full-day workshop attended. Other instructors will receive a $120 scholarship for each full-day workshop attended.
Microcantilever Model Workshops
This is a two-part workshop. You must attend Part I in order to attend Part II.
The Microcantilever Model Workshops – Part I and II will cover a variety of topics related to the micro-sized cantilevers used in MEMS (microelectromechanical systems). Cantilevers are everywhere and are critical components in MEMS. Workshop topics and activities include applications, fabrication, operation and theory of operation of microcantilevers used to measure micro and nano-sized particles.
Participants simulate a cantilever's operation under various "loads" (different masses). Cantilevers with different lengths, widths, thicknesses, and of different materials are used to illustrate how these cantilever characteristics affect its operation. The SCME Microcantilever Model Kit is used to support these activities.

Microcantilever Model Workshop - Part I: Saturday, February 28, 2015
This workshop will cover the basics of “what is a cantilever?”, microcantilever applications, resonant frequency, and data acquisition. Participants will be required to bring a camera or smart phone capable of recording video at a rate of at least 30 frames per second. If you don’t have one, we will partner you with someone who does. All activities will be completed in small teams with 3 to 4 participants.
Microcantilever Model Workshop – Part II: Saturday, March 14, 2015
This workshop will apply the information from Part I to acquire data on dynamic cantilever motion, and analyze that data to determine resonant frequency, displacement, velocity and acceleration. Further experiments will be conducted that allow you to analyze the effects of mass on resonant frequency - the core of measure extremely small amounts of material. Other topics discussed will compare and contrast repeatability, precision, and accuracy, as well as understanding the role of material properties such as Young’s (bulk) modulus. These complex concepts will be made easy to understand through the use of our hands-on, engaging materials.
Modeling a Micro Pressure Sensor Workshop: Saturday, April 11, and May 9th, 2015
Pre-workshop reading assignment: Micro Pressure Sensors & The Wheatstone Bridge Participant Guide “Wheatstone Bridge Overview, Primary Knowledge” - Registrants will receive access to the online Workshop Course.
This workshop will cover topics related to MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) pressure sensors. Topics include simple series and parallel electronic circuits, the Wheatstone bridge sensing circuit, strain gauges, how a micro pressure sensor works, its applications, and how it is fabricated. Activities include measuring resistance and voltage, comparing the resistivity characteristic of various materials, building a model of a micro pressure sensor, testing your model for changes in applied pressures, and creating a calibration curve for your micro pressure sensor model. This workshop uses SCME's Modeling a Micro Pressure Sensor kit to provide hands-on learning of many of these activities.
Manufacturing Technicians’ Skills and Careers: Saturday, April 25, 2015
Registrants will receive instructions as to how to connect to the online course.
This workshop will cover the basic career paths, knowledge, and skills needed by technicians when working in a microsystems manufacturing environment as well as the career opportunities for technicians and tech programs available to students. Topics include knowing your hazardous materials, how to locate and read a Material Data Safety Sheet, how to interpret NFPA diamonds (National Fire Protection Association), personal protective equipment – when and what is needed, laboratory and manufacturing facility safety rules, and cleanroom etiquette and garb. These topics will be taught using a variety of activities that can be easily incorporated into a variety of curricula. In addition, this workshop will cover the career pathways for manufacturing technician jobs and how to better prepare students for these careers.
